Beginner Project No. 8

 

Basket weave tessellation, 8th project in Eric Gjerde's book, is designed by Joel Cooper. This has open back hexagon twist and triangle twist. This pattern is similar to Open Back Hexagon Twist tessellation. The twists are very closely spaced and overlapping. I had trouble with the triangle twists since they are very close to hexagons. The triangle twists lie below the hexagon twists.

I didn't get this tessellation first time. I planned to make one open back hexagon twist and six triangle twists around it, like given in the book . I started with square sheet of paper and with lesser triangle grids. But as I went on to fold the triangle twists, the paper didn't neatly fold at the border. So I gave up and started second time by making more triangle grids. This time I made complete second layer (six more open back hexagon twists around the central hexagon). I could fold neatly at the border.

In this tessellation, unlike all others I have folded so far, the pattern we fold becomes back view. 

Mark Crease pattern and fold the diagonals of parallelogram for the open-back hexagon twist beforehand.

I had tough time with this tessellation because of close spacing!!!

Open-Back Hexagon Twist

Beginner Project No. 7

Open Back Hexagon Twist tessellation is the seventh of the Beginner Projects in Eric Gjerde's Origami tessellations. This pattern is very similar to 3.6.3.6 and Pinwheel tessellation.

This pattern has a new type of twist called open-back-hexagon twist. The other one is the very old triangle twist.

Again for this, I strongly suggest marking crease pattern beforehand, since open-back-hexagon-twist has additional creases other than triangle grids. It is very easy to fold once it is pre-creased. I took the help of a ruler to fold along the diagonal of parallelogram for the open back hexagon twist.

After trying out the open back triangle twist in Pinwheel tessellation, I found this pattern easy to follow. I loved both front and back view of this tessellation.

Pinwheel Tessellation

Beginner Project No. 6:

Pinwheel tessellation, by Eric Gjerde, is pretty much similar to 3.6.3.6. Instead of triangular twist, this has open back triangular twist.

Marking crease pattern is very much required. Apart from triangular grid creases, additional crease for open back triangular twist is required. I used a ruler to fold along the diagonal of the parallelogram to mark for the open back triangular twist.

I strongly suggest pre-creasing(given in the book) for this tessellation. The twists are easier to make if the creases are done before folding. No tricks, just follow the CP.

The pattern looks wonderful in light. 

The paper looks crumpled a lot, because of the many additional creases.

I should give this tessellation one more try.

3.6.3.6 Tessellation by Shuzo Fujimoto in different lighting 

Beginner Project No. 5 : 

 

Designed by Shuzo Fujimoto, 3.6.3.6 tessellation, the fifth beginner project in Eric Gjerde's book, is a semi-regular tessellation (What is tessellation?). It has repeating hexagons and triangles, hence the name 3.6.3.6.

Time : I took three days (about 2-3 hours) to complete it.

I started by learning to make a single hexagon twist, which is not so difficult.

The final model: combination of triangular twist and hexagonal twist. I didn't mark crease pattern for this. It's easier to figure out with crease patterns (CP) marked. Nevertheless I didn't have trouble identifying the positions of the hexagons and triangle twists. I just followed the instructions in the book.  Marking crease pattern before folding helps a lot, which I felt I should have marked beforehand. But not difficult to identify even without the CP.

A mistake I did is below. After making central hexagon and six triangle twists surrounding it, the next layer was creating two hexagons above and two below the central hexagon. After twisting one hexagon above or below (example : hexagon 1), do not create another one by it's side (example : hexagon 2). This will not allow to create a triangular twist in between them. The pattern gets locked and cannot proceed further. I took hours to figure out this and unfolded the hexagon 2 to create a triangle twist in between them and then created hexagon 2. 

Follow this throughout.

In the figure, two of the hexagon twists has a small pin hole. That's because of the above mistake I did. The two hexagons did not get twisted perfectly and hence there are wrinkles in paper in one or two places.
